How to Get to Akihabara: Station Exits, Coin Lockers & Crowd-Free Tips

The first challenge every Akihabara visitor faces is the "station exit problem." Take the wrong exit and you'll end up in an office district, wasting precious time trying to reach the Electric Town area. Online, the station is jokingly called the "Akihabara Dungeon" and a "newbie killer" — that's how notoriously confusing it is. This article covers everything about access: which exits to use, coin lockers, IC card options, and tips for avoiding the crowds.

Mastering JR Akihabara Station Exits

JR Akihabara Station has four types of exits: Electric Town Exit (South & North), Central Exit, Showa-dori Exit, and Atre 1 Exit. The "Akiba" everyone knows — the Electric Town and otaku district — spreads out on the station's west side. However, the Central Exit and Showa-dori Exit lead to the east side (Showa-dori Avenue / office district).

Exit-by-Exit Destination Guide:

ExitDestinationNotes
Electric Town Exit (South)Radio Kaikan, Chuo-dori, Maid Cafe StreetThe main exit for Akihabara sightseeing. On the Yamanote Line, stand near Car 8, Door 1 for the closest stairway
Electric Town Exit (North)Akihabara UDX, Animate, Bic Camera AKIBAConvenient for exploring the northern area
Central ExitYodobashi Camera Akiba, Akiba TrimBest for heading straight to Yodobashi. Also used for TX / Hibiya Line transfers
Showa-dori ExitAtre Akihabara 2, Hibiya Line transferEast side only

Recovery if you take the wrong exit: If you accidentally exit through the Central Exit, turn right and use the "East-West Free Passage" next to the escalators on the 2nd floor of Akiba Trim. You'll reach the Electric Town side in about 1 minute.

Pro tip: Skip JR altogether and get off at Suehirocho Station (Ginza Line). You'll emerge right on top of Chuo-dori with zero chance of getting lost. It's also less crowded — seasoned visitors prefer this route.

Transfers from the Hibiya Line & Tsukuba Express

From Hibiya Line Akihabara Station, it takes 5–7 minutes on foot to reach the Electric Town Exit: go through Exit 3, pass in front of Yodobashi Akiba, and use the East-West Free Passage. From Tsukuba Express (TX), take Exit A1 and go through the JR Central Exit area — about 3–5 minutes. Note that signs say "JR Transfer" rather than "Electric Town Exit," which can be confusing for foreign visitors. Using Google Maps navigation is the most reliable approach.

Complete Guide to Coin Lockers & Luggage Storage

Akihabara has many narrow back streets, making it extremely inconvenient to move around with suitcases or large shopping bags. On weekends, lockers outside the ticket gates are almost always full, so you need a strategic approach.
