Let's Draw with the Eyes of Science: Observing and Sketching Deep-Sea Fish

Observation is the first step to science! Join us at the National Museum of Nature and Science (Miraikan) for an engaging workshop where you'll observe and sketch deep-sea fish.

Scientists have long used sketches to communicate their discoveries. Even with modern cameras, drawing by hand is a valuable way to cultivate "the scientific eye" – the ability to observe things closely. In this workshop, you'll start by practicing dot-point sketching with anchovies (niboshi), a common sight. Once you've grasped the technique, you'll move on to observing and sketching a deep-sea fish, the Bigeye grenadier (mehikari).

Carefully observe its body color, fins, gills, eye size, and even its mouth. Imagine the ocean it inhabits and the food it eats. Your finished sketches can be taken home as stickers!

This workshop is designed to foster curiosity and inquiry, making observation fun for everyone from children to adults. Come and discover the joy of looking closely and drawing!
