Yamagata's Koguma Crafts: Twig Work Exhibition at Shibuya Hikarie
Shibuya Hikarie's d47 MUSEUM presents an exhibition of Yaman-budō (wild vine) crafts by KOGUMA from Yamagata. Featuring baskets woven with traditional Ajro-ami technique by artisan Hiroshi Ito.
Shibuya Hikarie will host "Twig Work Around Things: Yamagata KOGUMA's Craftsmanship," an exhibition showcasing the exquisite twig crafts from KOGUMA, based in Ooizawa, Nishikawa Town, Yamagata Prefecture.
This exhibition features Yaman-budō (wild vine) baskets crafted by Hiroshi Ito, a dedicated artisan who handles every step of the process himself, from gathering the vines in the mountains to preparing the bark and meticulously weaving the baskets. The highlight is the collection of five sizes of Yaman-budō baskets made using Ajro-ami, a traditional weaving technique from Ooizawa. The precise shaving of each vine and the careful, powerful weaving in every stitch result in pieces that are both aesthetically beautiful and remarkably durable, with a minimalist design that accentuates the artisan's skill.
Discover the quiet charm of Yaman-budō baskets that mature beautifully with use. We invite you to experience the tangible quality of these handcrafted items.
