Kobu Inari Shrine Goshuin Distribution: Commemorating Kobu Geisha History in Akihabara
Limited edition Goshuin featuring the history of Kobu Geisha will be distributed at Kobu Inari Shrine on June 6, 2026, from 11 AM to 1 PM in the Akihabara Electric Town area.
The Akihabara Electric Town Promotion Association is hosting an event to distribute special Goshuin (temple/shrine seals) at Kobu Inari Shrine, located in the Kanda Hatagocho area. This event offers a chance to connect with the history of the district when it flourished as a geisha district and the "Kobu Geisha" were active.
History of Kobu Geisha and Kobu Inari Shrine
During the Ansei era of the Edo period, Kagahara (present-day Sotokanda 1-chome), which was a firebreak area outside the Sujijigaimon Gate, was incorporated into a pleasure district to generate funds for the Kobusho (a military training facility established by the Edo Shogunate). The "Kobu Geisha," named after the Kobusho, became famous. The district's main geisha house was located near the present-day Karaoke Pasela, and at its peak, it housed about 90 geigi (geisha), enjoying prosperity until the late 1950s. Kobu Inari Shrine has walked alongside the history of this area.
Limited Edition Goshuin and Character
A Goshuin with a design featuring the "Kobu Geisha Trio," created by Akiba Ruki (Aki-kore) as an image character, has been produced to commemorate the history of the flourishing Kobu Geisha. This Goshuin will be distributed monthly in front of Kobu Inari Shrine. It provides a precious opportunity to reflect on a part of the area's past.
