Hakataza Grand Kabuki 'Boat Parade' Ceremony at Canal City Hakata

This traditional event marks the actors' grand arrival in Hakata by boat, a cherished spectacle that has become a signature of early summer in the region.

About the Boat Parade

The "Boat Parade" is a time-honored Kabuki tradition where renowned actors would enter the Kansai region (formerly Kamigata) from Edo (present-day Tokyo) by boat. Nowadays, this ritual is uniquely preserved and celebrated annually only on the Hakata River in Fukuoka. This year marks the 25th occurrence since its revival in 1999 to commemorate the opening of the Hakataza Theatre.

On the day of the event, Kabuki actors and related personnel participating in the "June Hakataza Grand Kabuki" will board 11 boats. They will embark on a picturesque journey spanning approximately 800 meters from the Seiryu Park, adjacent to Canal City, along the Hakata River to Hakata Riverain, a voyage expected to take about 35 minutes. The parade is characterized by vibrantly colored banners bearing the actors' names and traditional lanterns.

Boarding Ceremony Details

Prior to the boat parade itself, a boarding ceremony will take place at the B1F Sun Plaza Stage. This event offers a chance to witness the actors preparing to board and hear opening remarks from organizers and performers, immersing attendees in the festive Kabuki atmosphere.
