Bhajju Shyam 'MORIBITO' Exhibition at Matsuzakaya Nagoya
Bhajju Shyam's 'MORIBITO' exhibition at Matsuzakaya Nagoya, Nov 19-23, 2026. Features original art, animation, and merchandise.
An exhibition celebrating the release of "MORIBITO," a new picture book and short animation jointly produced by India and Japan by artist Bhajju Shyam, an artist from the Gond tribe in India, will be held at Matsuzakaya Nagoya. This exhibition marks the first public display of "MORIBITO" original drawings and animation in the Tokai region, offering a valuable opportunity to experience Shyam's artistic world.
The World of Memories and Life Drawn by an Indian Storyteller
Bhajju Shyam is renowned for his intricate lines and vibrant colors, which express the myths and nature perspectives of the indigenous Gond people of central India. He has gained international recognition for works such as "The Night Life of Trees," published by Tara Books. In 2018, he became the first Gond artist to receive India's prestigious "Padma Shri" award. In Japan, his previous solo exhibitions at World Heritage sites like Toji Temple (Kyoto) and Honkoji Temple (Kamakura) attracted approximately 30,000 visitors, creating a significant wave of emotion.
"MORIBITO" is an autobiographical work narrated by Bhajju Shyam himself, accompanied by his newly created original illustrations. The exhibition will feature this work as a picture book, characterized by its rich colors and textured paper, and a short animation where the depicted landscapes and creatures gently come to life, accompanied by the voice of Shyam and music by renowned Japanese tabla player U-zhaan. Through the book and animation, visitors can explore the artist's life and memories, and the overlapping layers of worlds.
