Radiation Watching: Build Your Own Detector at Nagoya City Science Museum!

The Nagoya City Science Museum, located at 2-17-1 Sakae, Naka-ku, Nagoya, will host an event titled "Radiation Watching." This event invites participants to build their own "Air GM Tube Kit" to measure ambient radiation. The assembly process is straightforward and requires no prior knowledge. The completed detector can be used for various science experiments, allowing attendees to gain practical knowledge and skills related to radiation.

Experts from Nagoya University and other institutions will serve as instructors, guiding participants through a comprehensive program that includes lectures on the basics of radiation, kit assembly, and actual measurement experiments. An observation experiment of radiation tracks using a cloud chamber is also planned.

The event runs from Wednesday, July 29, to Saturday, August 1, 2026, with specific dates for different participant groups:

High School Student Course
One day between Wednesday, July 29, and Thursday, July 30, 2026
9:40 AM - 4:45 PM
Eligibility: High school and technical college students (priority for residents of Aichi, Gifu, and Mie prefectures)

Teacher/General Course
One day between Friday, July 31, and Saturday, August 1, 2026
9:40 AM - 4:45 PM
Eligibility: Teachers of high schools, junior high schools, and elementary schools; general public interested in science experiments (priority for residents of Aichi, Gifu, and Mie prefectures)

Participation is free of charge. The capacity is 14 participants per day for each course. Applications are accepted from Monday, May 18, to Tuesday, June 30, 2026. If the number of applicants exceeds the capacity, a lottery will be held.
