The "Bussan MARKET Special Project Vol. 5: Shizuoka - Takeshi Yamauchi's Noren and Tenugui" exhibition will be held at Shibuya Hikarie.

The Powerful World of Shizuoka-Based Dyer Takeshi Yamauchi

This special project focuses on the stencil-dyed works of Takeshi Yamauchi (88 years old), a dyer active in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Hamamatsu has a long-standing tradition of cotton weaving and dyeing industries since the Edo period. Mr. Yamauchi, even at his advanced age, handles almost all processes from design to dyeing himself. The exhibition will feature his "noren" (traditional Japanese fabric dividers) and "tenugui" (hand towels) characterized by strong yet healthy designs, including mountain ranges resembling Mt. Fuji, flowing curves, and geometric patterns.

Tradition and Innovation in Dyeing

Hamamatsu City boasts an environment conducive to dyeing, blessed with the abundant waters of the Tenryu-gawa River, a temperate climate, and the "Enshu no Karakkaze" (strong seasonal winds). Inheriting this tradition, Mr. Yamauchi's unique artistic sensibility shines through his creations, offering visitors new discoveries. The "noren" and "tenugui" that blend traditional techniques with contemporary design not only add color to daily life but also allow attendees to experience the depth of Japanese dyeing.
