Andrew Wyeth Exhibition: Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum's 100th Anniversary
The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum celebrates its 100th anniversary with a retrospective of Andrew Wyeth. This is the first major exhibition in Japan since his death, exploring his spiritual world through the theme of "boundaries" and featuring over 10 new works.
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, a highly anticipated retrospective of Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009), a master of 20th-century American figurative painting, will be held.
This exhibition focuses on the motif of "boundaries" that frequently appears in Wyeth's works. Elements like windows and doors served as crucial links for Wyeth, connecting life and death, or his inner world with the external one. Through this theme, the exhibition delves into the profound spiritual realm reflected in his art.
Wyeth has enjoyed immense popularity in Japan since his first solo exhibition here in 1974. This exhibition marks the first comprehensive retrospective in Japan since his passing. With over 10 works making their Japanese debut, including "Winter Fields" (1942) from the Whitney Museum of American Art, it offers a precious opportunity to re-experience the allure of Wyeth's artistry.
A commemorative lecture by Mr. Hideharu Takahashi, Director of the Toyota City Museum of Art and curator of this exhibition, will also be held.
