Mid-Autumn Moon Viewing at Miraikan 2026: National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation

The National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation (Miraikan) in Odaiba, Tokyo, will host "Mid-Autumn Moon Viewing at Miraikan 2026" from Friday, September 18 to Sunday, September 27, 2026. This special event series is themed around the moon, coinciding with the Mid-Autumn Festival.

The event celebrates the traditional "Chushu Meigetsu" (Mid-Autumn Moon) and offers a variety of moon-related programs over ten days. Utilizing Miraikan's iconic "Geo-Cosmos," a large spherical display, attendees can experience a unique moon-viewing event that is exclusive to the museum.

Moon Viewing with Geo-Cosmos

Daily programs titled "Moon Viewing with Geo-Cosmos" will feature the Geo-Cosmos displaying the moon. Science Communicators will provide live commentary, discussing the science and latest topics related to the moon while referencing the spherical display. This offers a special perspective, allowing visitors to enjoy both the near and far sides of the moon as presented on the sphere. These sessions run daily from 13:35 to 13:40. On Tuesday, September 22 (a public holiday), the program will include sign language interpretation and will be held in front of the Geo-Cosmos on the 3rd floor.

Tour of the Far Side of the Moon

Additionally, a "Tour of the Far Side of the Moon" will be offered. Science Communicators will guide participants around the Geo-Cosmos, explaining not only the near side but also the hidden far side of the moon. This special tour provides an opportunity to appreciate the moon from a different vantage point. The tour takes place from 15:00 to 15:15, with participants meeting at the Co-Studio on the 5th floor. The tour has a limited capacity of about 10 people. Please note that program details may be subject to change or cancellation.
