PaperLab Workshop at National Museum of Nature and Science on Sept 26, 2026. Learn paper recycling, make notebooks. For grades 3-6. Free, requires advance registration.
The "PaperLab Workshop: Thinking About the Future of Paper" will be held at the National Museum of Nature and Science in Koto Ward, Tokyo, on Saturday, September 26, 2026. This event offers participants a hands-on opportunity to learn about the relationship between paper, which is essential to our daily lives, and the environment, as well as the importance of resource circulation. Participants will explore the latest paper recycling technology and consider the role of paper in the future of Tokyo.
Paper Recycling Technology and Original Notebook Creation
The workshop will introduce the latest technology for creating recycled paper from used paper with minimal water usage. After understanding the mechanisms of paper recycling and resource circulation through quizzes and videos, participants will actually cut used paper and create recycled paper through heating and pressurization. Furthermore, they will engage in making their own original notebooks using the recycled paper they create. This experience aims to deepen understanding of why paper recycling is important, where used paper goes, and what resources are needed to produce paper, fostering consideration for the effective use of limited resources.
The Future of Tokyo and Its Relationship with Paper
Beyond learning about recycled paper production, this workshop encourages participants to imagine how paper usage might change and how future Tokyo could transform as this technology spreads. It provides a platform for participants to exercise their creativity regarding a sustainable relationship between paper and the environment, and new ways of interacting with paper in future lifestyles. The event is designed to increase awareness of environmental issues among the next generation.
