【まなざしの奇跡 日本女性写真家の冒険】

The exhibition "The Miracle of Gazes: Adventures of Japanese Female Photographers" will be held at Shibuya Hikarie from July 4 (Sat) to August 26 (Wed), 2026. This exhibition, a celebratory commemoration of the world tour that captivated 140,000 visitors in Europe, expands its roster of artists and exhibits, offering a profound exploration into the creative expressions of Japanese female photographers.

Reconsidering Japanese Photography History Through Diverse Expressions

In recent years, the international spotlight on Japanese photography has seen a growing movement to re-evaluate the traditionally male-dominated narrative. The book "I’m So Happy You Are Here," published in the summer of 2024, and its accompanying exhibition have critically illuminated the pivotal roles played by female photographers from the 1950s to the present day, charting Japanese photographic history from a fresh perspective.

A Grand Assembly of 30 Renowned Female Photographers

This exhibition brings together an unprecedented collection of works by 30 female photographers. In addition to the 26 artists from the European tour, four new artists—Hisue Imai, Ai Iwakoshi, Aya Fujioka, and Tomoko Yoneda—join the showcase. Featuring approximately 200 pieces, the exhibition transcends the boundaries of "photography" to encompass installations, collages, and video works, presenting a wide spectrum of artistic approaches.

Immersive Exhibitions Unique to Shibuya Hikarie

Leveraging the expansive space of Hikarie Hall, the exhibition features dynamic installations by Ai Iwakoshi, Hiroko Komatsu, Yuki Tawada, and Yuria Nagashima. Furthermore, interactive works such as Tomoko Sawada's "OMIAI♡" and video projections by Rinko Kawauchi and Mika Ninagawa offer unique experiences exclusive to this venue. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Shibuya, a city teeming with diverse individuals, this exhibition promises to be a thought-provoking journey, posing questions about contemporary society and varied perspectives through the medium of photography.
