Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum 100th Anniversary Art Communication Experience 2026
Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum hosts a free exhibition from July 31 to August 10, 2026, celebrating its 100th anniversary by showcasing art communication projects and fostering visitor interaction.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, located in Ueno Park, will host "Experiencing Art Communication Projects 2026" to commemorate its 100th anniversary. This exhibition focuses on the experience of "viewing together, spending time together" at the museum, exploring its richness and meaning.
Art Communication Projects
Since 2023, the museum has held experiential exhibitions like this one to widely promote its art communication activities. In this, its fourth year, the exhibition highlights how diverse individuals meet, view art together, and foster new discoveries and relationships within the museum setting.
Exhibition Content
The exhibition features a video installation by filmmaker Yasuhiro Moriuchi, who has re-edited archival footage from past art communication projects. This visual presentation illustrates how people of various ages and backgrounds interact at the museum and build new experiences through art. Art communicators (nicknamed "Tobira") will be present to welcome visitors and support their viewing experience.
Additionally, works by two selected students from the Tokyo University of the Arts' 2025 Graduation and Completion Exhibition will be displayed, based on interviews conducted by "Tobira" for the "Geidai Student Interview" content on the Tobira Project website. This showcases the engagement of emerging artists with the museum.
Aiming for an Inclusive Museum
By providing a space for visitors and "Tobira" to appreciate artworks together and engage through art, this exhibition aims to foster a museum environment where diverse people interact and cultivate culture. It serves as an opportunity to reaffirm the museum's mission as "an entrance to art open to everyone" and to explore the future of museums.
