Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum 100th Anniversary Art Communication Exhibition 2026
Exhibition "Experiencing Art Communication Project 2026" at Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, July 31 - Aug 10, 2026. Free admission. Focuses on shared art experiences and interaction.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum will host the "Experiencing Art Communication Project 2026" exhibition from July 31 to August 10, 2026, celebrating its 100th anniversary. This exhibition focuses on the experience of "viewing and spending time together" in the museum with others, exploring the richness and meaning of the Art Communication Project.
The exhibition will feature a video installation by filmmaker Yasuhiro Moriauci, who re-edited past archival footage. This installation will depict how people of various ages and backgrounds meet at the museum, view works together, and foster new discoveries and relationships. Art Communicators (Tobira) will be present to welcome visitors and support their viewing experience. Additionally, works by two selected students from the Tokyo University of the Arts' 2025 graduation exhibition, interviewed for the "Geidai Student Interview" content on the Tobira Project website, will be displayed.
This event aims to create a space where visitors and Tobira can share and appreciate artworks, fostering interaction through art. It seeks to explore the future of museums as places where diverse individuals engage and cultivate culture, reaffirming the museum's mission to be an "entrance to art open to everyone."
Admission is free. The exhibition is accessible, with works that can be appreciated by touch for visually impaired visitors, braille and audio descriptions for some texts, tactile diagrams for paintings, sign language video interpretations, and support for筆談 (written communication) and UD Talk. Art Communicators are available to assist with viewing as needed.
