Treasures of Miidera: National Treasures Exhibition at Tokyo National Museum

Special exhibition "Treasures of Miidera" at Tokyo National Museum from April 20 to June 13, 2027, commemorating the 1100th anniversary of Chisho Daishi, showcasing Miidera Temple's treasures.

A special exhibition, "Treasures of Miidera: All About National Treasures of Miidera," commemorating the 1100th anniversary of the posthumous title of Chisho Daishi, will be held at the Tokyo National Museum.

Masterpieces from Miidera, a Representative Temple of Shiga

This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to view treasures from Enryaku-ji Temple, commonly known as "Miidera," the head temple of the Tendai Jimon sect, all in one place. Miidera, which was revived by Chisho Daishi Eshin during the Heian period, has survived numerous wars and continues to pass down its teachings to this day. The year 2027 marks the 1100th anniversary of Eshin being granted the title "Chisho Daishi" by Emperor Daigo. To commemorate this milestone, a wide array of precious artifacts associated with Eshin, including National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties, will be exhibited.

Among the highlights is the Important Cultural Property "Seated Statue of Nyoirin Kannon" (Heian period, 10th-11th century, from Miidera Temple). In addition, numerous other masterpieces, including Buddhist statues, paintings, calligraphy, and crafts that Miidera is proud of, are scheduled to be displayed.
