[July 12] B6 Driving Experience at Nagoya City Science Museum: FUJI Railway Plaza Event
Nagoya City Science Museum's FUJI Railway Plaza hosts a regular event featuring a B6 steam locomotive driving experience, railway car exhibitions, and expert commentary.
The Nagoya City Science Museum's outdoor exhibition area, "FUJI Railway Plaza," located in Sakae, Naka-ku, Nagoya, will host its regular event, the "B6 Driving Experience," on Sunday, July 12, 2026. This event offers a diverse program for railway enthusiasts and families alike, including the chance to operate the historic B6 steam locomotive, view the interiors of valuable railway cars, and listen to live commentary from knowledgeable railway volunteers.
Main Event Contents
This event primarily consists of three experiences. First, the “B6 Driving Experience” allows participants to operate the throttle handle, equivalent to a car's accelerator, and actually move the driving wheels of the B6 steam locomotive. The sounds and vibrations from the driving wheels, felt from the driver's cab, will provide a rare opportunity to experience the true power of the locomotive. This driving experience requires numbered tickets, distributed at the B6 driver's cab entrance at specified times for morning and afternoon sessions.
Next, as a free participation event, the “Imperial Escort Car and City Tram Interior Exhibition” will be held. This is a precious chance to see up close the interior of Imperial Escort Car No. 344, which was used by attendants of the imperial family, and a Nagoya City Tram, which is usually inaccessible. Visitors can ponder the history and role of each vehicle while carefully observing their interiors. This exhibition is available in morning and afternoon slots, allowing free viewing during those times.
Furthermore, during the “Live Commentary by Volunteers,” railway experts will provide easy-to-understand explanations about the B6 steam locomotive, the Imperial Escort Car, and the city tram near each exhibit in the railway plaza. Listening directly to knowledgeable commentators will deepen understanding of the exhibits and enhance appreciation for the charm of railways. Each commentary session lasts approximately 15 minutes, with specific times set for the B6 steam locomotive and the Imperial Escort Car/City Tram.
Important Considerations for Visitors
While participation in this event is free, a separate admission fee is required to enter the Nagoya City Science Museum. Please check the museum's official website for details on admission fees. The “B6 Driving Experience” requires numbered tickets; each group, limited to a maximum of 4 people, will have a 5-minute experience slot. Tickets will be distributed in front of the B6 driver's cab, so early arrival is recommended for those wishing to participate. Please note that all events may be canceled due to the risk of heatstroke, so it is important to check weather information and the latest updates from the science museum in advance on the day of the event.
