Yu Seto Exhibition CIRCULATION 2

The Bunkamura Gallery 8/ on the 8th floor of Shibuya Hikarie will host "Yu Seto Exhibition CIRCULATION 2," a solo exhibition by sculptor Yu Seto. This exhibition will showcase life-sized terracotta sculptures of wild animals, exploring the theme of the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.

Sculptures Expressing the Cycle of Life

Yu Seto is known for his unique technique of embedding glass eyes into his sculptures, primarily creating life-sized wild animals. The deliberate presence of hand and tool marks, along with the texture of the clay, imbues his works with a palpable sense of life. The warmth of the material and the clarity of the animal's eyes evoke a sense of familiarity and affection within their dignified, wild presence. Seto's art reflects the philosophy that life and death in nature are not distinct opposites but are interconnected within a grand cycle, where death leads to return to the earth, fostering new growth and life.

Evolution from the Previous Exhibition

His previous solo exhibition, "CIRCULATION," held at Bunkamura Gallery four years ago, focused on "moments of predation" in the food chain, leaving a strong impression on many visitors. This sequel expands the temporal scope to encompass the broader cycle of life, death, and regeneration, presented across four thematic scenes: "Existence," "Wildness," "Circulation," and "Rebirth." The exhibition features approximately 40 new works, including jackals stalking prey, vultures after a meal, lion skulls intertwined with plants, and a food chain extending from plants to wolves. The newly unveiled series of bone sculptures and canvas works are also highlights.

Live Sculpture Creation Event

During the exhibition period, a live sculpture creation event by Yu Seto will take place at COURT, adjacent to the gallery on the 8th floor of Shibuya Hikarie. Visitors can witness firsthand the process of a wolf sculpture being formed from clay. Furthermore, for one week following the live creation, the evolving state of the artwork, influenced by visitor interaction and natural weathering, will be displayed. This event is free to enter, requires no prior reservation, and allows for free entry and exit.
